Common Questions Answered by Broadway @ Burrard Chiropractic
Chiropractic Care has significant historic roots that can be traced back to early medical literature. With findings recorded between 2700 B.C. and 1500 B.C. literature mentioning spinal manipulation to ease back pain has been recorded by Ancient Greek and Chinese Physicians. However, Chiropractic care only began gaining momentum in North America over the late nineteenth century. This explains why it remains a curiosity for much of the general public who stay unaware of the many benefits of today’s Chiropractic treatment for pain management and beyond.
Here at Broadway at Burrard we make it our goal to leave no stone unturned when it comes to answering your questions regarding how Chiropractic care can benefit your life. So today on The Blog Dr. Tyler Hunsberger and Dr. Jerry Wright answer some of the most commonly asked questions regarding Chiropractic Care.
1. What exactly is a Chiropractic Adjustment?
A Chiropractic adjustment is a precise movement, conducted by a highly skilled practitioner, applied by hand to a joint in the body. An adjustment aids to restore proper movement and optimise joint function. When a joint is adjusted, a gas bubble escapes, creating that “popping noise”. Chiropractic adjustments have been extensively researched for their health benefits and side effects, such as temporary soreness, are minor and rare.
2. When should I see a Chiropractor?
Did you know that eight out of every 10 Canadians will experience back pain at some point in their life? For many, this pain can take away from work, active lifestyle, school, and simple day to day interactions. Pain should never interrupt our day to day activities. If you are experiencing pain, consult a regulated professional Chiropractor to diagnose, treat and prevent conditions of the spine, joints, muscular and nervous systems that are likely causing it. Our goal is to diagnose the source of the pain, relieve the pain, maintain your health and get you back to your activities, your sports, your career, your LIFE.
What you may not know is that Chiropractic care is not just for pain management. Many patients, including seniors, seek treatment to aid in mobility or joint and spinal problems, while other patients come for treatment as a strategy for general wellness care. The same way we bring our car in for general maintenance, many patients seek Chiropractic care even when they don’t have painful symptoms. These “tune ups” help catch ailments early that may later become major issues and help maintain a healthy spine and joint function.
3. I’m an Athlete? Would Chiropractic Care Benefit me?
Dr. Wright and Dr. Tyler are proud of their athlete patients! Here at Broadway at Burrard Chiropractic our doctors treat many amateur and professional athletes as a key strategy in their overall health care, fitness and maintenance programs. Often used to improve muscle and joint function, a direct application to athletic performance, chiropractic treatment has the potential to help athletes better their own biomechanical function and enhance overall performance and conditioning. Chiropractic care can also help athlete’s fine tune their muscle and joint function reducing long term wear and tear while also shortening, and sometimes preventing, the healing time of an injury. Take a look over past blog entries to read more about our athletes and the amazing things they are doing with the help of Chiropractic Care.
4. Is Chiropractic Care Safe?
No health treatment is completely free of potential adverse effects, but Chiropractic care has an excellent safety record widely recognised as one of the safest, drug free, non – invasive therapies available for treatment of back and neck pain. Some patients experience temporary numbness, stiffness, swelling or dizziness. However, adverse effects associated with the treatment are typically short lived and minor by nature while the benefits are staggering.
5. What is Laser Therapy?
Here at Broadway at Burrard Chiropractic we are one of the few clinics in the Vancouver area that offer laser therapy to our patients. Laser therapy utilizes diodes emitting specific light wavelengths to bathe abnormal tissue with photons. The light source is placed in contact with the skin allowing the photon energy to penetrate tissue, where it interacts with various cells within our body, resulting in a number of positive physiological responses.
Laser therapy can treat a variety of conditions, including musculoskeletal problems, arthritis, sport injuries as well as dermatological conditions.
Some advantages of laser therapy include non-invasive, nontoxic treatment that is easily applied and highly effective with no known side effects. Conditions that can be treated by laser therapy include, but are not limited to, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel, rotator cuff, temporo-mandibular joint dysfunction, low back pain, fractures, arthritis, eczema, burns and other dermatological conditions.
6. What is ART?
ART stands for Active Release Technique and is a patented, state-of-the-art soft tissue system treating problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves that Dr. Tyler Hunsberger has been certified in at Broadway at Burrard. Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved with ART. These conditions all have one important thing in common: they often result from injury to over-used muscles.
Every ART session is a combination of examination and treatment. Here at Broadway at Burrard Chiropractic Dr. Tyler Hunsberger uses his hands to evaluate the texture, tightness and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific movements. These treatment protocols – over 500 specific moves – are unique to ART and sessions typically last about 10-15 minutes with the problem resolving in 4-5 treatments.
Along with the ART treatment, chiropractic manipulation and rehabilitative exercise to improve strength and flexibility are usually advised.
