I’ve had four people come into the office this past week, all reading the same book! Given its popularity, I found it fitting to wright a few words on the topic for this weeks Blog. Brain and Nervous system health seems to be a hot topic these days, so if you want to know the many ways your brain and nervous system make you healthy, have a look at The Brain’s Way of Healing by Norman Doidge.
Initially in his text Doidge explains how the brain and nervous system control every aspect of your conscious and unconscious behavior. This includes all movement, breathing, perception, pain, and even emotions. Because your brain and nervous system are so important to all aspects of living, these are protected by your skull and your vertebrae. Any misalignment of your vertebrae will interfere with the nervous system and cause reduced function.
Chiropractic adjustments can certainly help to relieve stress on the nervous system, but what Doidge deals with is when the nervous system is actually damaged. It has been thought that nervous system tissue when damage, does not repair, or only repairs minimally. However, Doidge has shown that this neural tissue, when stimulated, will actually form new connections for nerves to communicate around an injury. This neural plasticity can be accomplished by using Low Intensity Laser which is what we use at Broadway Burrard Chiropractic for many types of injury; including whiplashes, soft tissue injuries of the shoulder, arm and leg.
Doidge describes the developer of the Laser Dr. Fred Kahn in Toronto. Dr. Kahn is a friend of mine and his laser is used on a daily basis in mine and Dr. Hunsberger’s practices. The laser produces remarkable results in many types of injuries that we see daily at Broadway Burrard Chiropractic.
If you interested in learning more about Doidge’s writings and cold laser therapy, come on in to see us at Broadway at Burrard Chiropractic today at https://broadwayburrardchiro.com/contact/.
